National Independance Day
Thoughts on July 4th
First, I would like to thank all of you who came out. Additionally, thanks to Captain Kateman, who went out to help me change tires on the trailer even though he could not attend. Also, the battery acknowledges the fidelity & patriotism of Corporal Scotty Creely who despite a dehabilitating illness rose off his sick bed to support his brothers.
I have a few thoughts to share; I would be interested in hearing yours…
1) I enjoy the July 4th event. It is a wonderful time of fellowship & something that benefits both the unit & the community.
2) We were well treated this year. I appreciate the pizza & ice water.
3) Having said all of that, I must admit to some ill ease.
A) I am proud of the South. I will fiercely defend our heritage & the memory of those men who died trying to win her freedom. If you have spent any time around me, you know how I feel. Still, Independence Day is NOT a Confederate Holiday. I don’t know that attending as a Confederate Battery is appropriate.
B) Our manner of dress while not commented on, was apparently, not in the spirit of the event. As I stated, I don’t know if we want to go Confederate… If we show up as Federal I am afraid we will be putting a thumb in the eye of our hosts (go figure)
C) We are not part of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I dislike being presented as a “SCV Battery”.
D) Further, I am not too thrilled about being billed “Under the Command of Jack Milar”. If “Colonel” Milar is going to present himself as a Colonel, & as the commander of all “SCV Artillery” in the state, he could at least wear the uniform properly. Further, he made it abundantly clear he was not too exited about our drill…
E) As with any event the SCV attends, the number of Colonels, Generals, & high muckety Mucks was unbelievable. (Although it appears that the correct rank for any gun commander is full colonel)…
Perhaps I am just nit picking? In any event, I had a grand time. Thanks for participating.
