In the Movies?
From Captain Smith 2NCMI:
"Hey Guys, I've been approached by a movie company, wanting to make a movie in western NC about Stoneman's Raid, using downtown Rutherfordton, Pearson Falls, the Green River Plantation as the setting. As of now, the principal actors are Sam Elliot and Renee Zellweger. They will pay all the reenactors well. They want 4 or 5 days of shooting, the rub being the scheduled dates for shooting is the 2nd and 3rd weekends in April. I'll send more info as soon as they get it to me, I just got off the initial phone call with them. They want 200 reenactors if possible. Unknown at this time is the blue:gray ratio, so all units should be able to galvanize if needed. Also unknown about mounted/artillery but I was asked if we could provide a battle to film. What I need from you is a 'yes' or a 'no' if you want to be included on future emails. A yes doesn't mean you are committing to coming, but that you would consider it, based on what we find out. A no is simply that, you aren't interested. I'll only include the 'yes' answers on future emails and will keep you updated as soon as I am updated. I plan on meeting with them next week to iron out the details and to review the script. If your answer is yes, please let me know how many troops you will bring. I realize it is like nailing jello to a tree that far away, but a rough count will help. Feel free to pass this to other units and give them my contact: smittyc7@windstream.net Smitty"

JEB Stuart AAR
A brief after-action on the affair at Aarat Va (AKA JEB Stuart):
Pro’s
1. We ate well. Creely outdid himself, breakfast @ Prime was very good for the cost
2.Camping- I know, I know, it wasn’t level. But it sure as Heck beat being sat 1/2 mile away from everything with the Confederate Artillery… our car access was great!
3. 3rd US Artillery- These guys are a good battery- an old school battery. They are safe, & they shoot well. Partnered with them, we are not assailable.
4. Your fire on Sunday probably decimated several generations of chipmunks & small forest rodents
Con’s
1. The scenario was (at least to me) incomprehensible… Let’s get together, have a big infantry fest in the woods, run off the Cavalry (from a cavalry event!?) have the artillery shooting at Lord only knows what, & stage the whole thing so the crowd can see next to nothing…
2. We were poorly deployed & used. Saturday, we were shooting at vague sounds in the woods. Sunday, we were deployed where there was no troops (at least until the “Final assault” when, by the way, we were not allowed to fire…) Apparently the powers that be consider us to be no more than noisemakers.
3. O.K., O.K, the campsite was on a slope. There, I said it.
4. Attendance!? In the not too distant past, we would put 10-12 guys on the ground at JEB. This year we had to draft Sylvia to field a full gun crew.
5. Sutler’s row was sparse. This may well be a result of the economy. I think a lot of the smaller players have just said, “The Hell with it”.
6. Giving Federal Artillery Command to some dufus with a mortar detachment- this guy has never crewed, yet alone commanded, an actual field piece. I don’t seek artillery command, but to place our officer’s & men under a guy who is clueless is a slap in the face.
7. Officer’s call- nothing like unannounced meetings on Friday night…
8. The “Mortar Battery” These people are a threat to safety-ours in particular.
9. If the event is going to finish Sunday's battle with a "grand suprise assault" sweeping up a steep wooded hill, perhaps they should consider:
A. Sending out some scouts to be sure its passible
B. Getting some younger assault troops so the force does not need to stop midway up to catch its breath.
Watching this debaucle (which we were not allowed to fire on or assualt) Creely summed it up nicely, "Sir, can we just turn our guns on ourselves?"

Duke

Lions & Tigers & Panzers (Oh My!)
Pros-
Unit execution on the battlefield & moral remain high. We kicked butt on Saturday, & gave them a dammed good bloody nose on Sunday.
The new “Shinnies” performed like veteran troops
Our veteran’s treatment of the “Shinnies” was courteous & welcoming.
Cons-
Camping- This has always been an area of potential improvement- our camp was slack. This time, it was not our fault. The “Farb Fest 09” atmosphere made it silly to try to enforce 19th century camp discipline- but I’m afraid it did not make a great impression with the new troops.
Farb Fest 09- Need I say more? Perhaps for Farb Fest 10, They will include Clone Wars Reenactors or Trekkies
Amenities were non-existent.
Breaking a sponge on Sunday sucked. At least we cleared it out of the tube.
The gun trailer needs another new tire before JEB Stuart.

My humble thanks go to all.

National Independance Day
First, I would like to thank all of you who came out. Additionally, thanks to Captain Kateman, who went out to help me change tires on the trailer even though he could not attend. Also, the battery acknowledges the fidelity & patriotism of Corporal Scotty Creely who despite a dehabilitating illness rose off his sick bed to support his brothers.
I have a few thoughts to share; I would be interested in hearing yours…
1) I enjoy the July 4th event. It is a wonderful time of fellowship & something that benefits both the unit & the community.
2) We were well treated this year. I appreciate the pizza & ice water.
3) Having said all of that, I must admit to some ill ease.
A) I am proud of the South. I will fiercely defend our heritage & the memory of those men who died trying to win her freedom. If you have spent any time around me, you know how I feel. Still, Independence Day is NOT a Confederate Holiday. I don’t know that attending as a Confederate Battery is appropriate.
B) Our manner of dress while not commented on, was apparently, not in the spirit of the event. As I stated, I don’t know if we want to go Confederate… If we show up as Federal I am afraid we will be putting a thumb in the eye of our hosts (go figure)
C) We are not part of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I dislike being presented as a “SCV Battery”.
D) Further, I am not too thrilled about being billed “Under the Command of Jack Milar”. If “Colonel” Milar is going to present himself as a Colonel, & as the commander of all “SCV Artillery” in the state, he could at least wear the uniform properly. Further, he made it abundantly clear he was not too exited about our drill…
E) As with any event the SCV attends, the number of Colonels, Generals, & high muckety Mucks was unbelievable. (Although it appears that the correct rank for any gun commander is full colonel)…
Perhaps I am just nit picking? In any event, I had a grand time. Thanks for participating.

Commander's Notes, Hot Springs
My thanks to everyone who attended, & special thanks to our “fightin Chaplain” who joined the ranks.
Pro’s
1) The level of gun crew proficiency is outstanding. There was a time, many years ago, that I knew deep in my heart that Columbia could take it to any battery on the field. Y’all are there, if not a little better.
2) The general level of military skills, training, & moral is high. Because y’all are able to switch jobs, cover each other & anticipate each other’s actions; it allows us to project a lot more force on the field than our numbers deserve.
3) I was pretty torqued Sunday morning, & about thoroughly tired of listening to the Rebs talk trash. I had decided that somebody was going to pay for ruining my mood. Apparently, y’all felt the same. The Rebel Cav must have thought they had rode into a buzz saw Sunday Afternoon. Good job.
4) Weapons were well cleaned & maintained going into the weekend action-Good Job!
5) Pistol awareness/Safety has improved 100%. Keep it up!
6) Thank you for keeping the cars out of camp. It’s nice to not have to fight that battle endlessly.
7) Working jointly with the 3rd US went very well. They are another ‘old School” battery with a well-trained crew (not to mention they are good guys).
8) Moving the guns forward in support of the advancing Infantry was cool & it is historically correct- Sunday was a blast.
9) The Chaplain in the camp helps cut down on the rough humor (no Aussie demons!)
10) Your treatment of the new troop was commendable.
11) I enjoyed breakfast at the local diner immensely.
Opportunities
1) Our numbers are not where they need to be. We are at the rock bottom minimum level to project force on the field at the level we expect. One more guy lays out; we will get lame real quick. Already we are at the point where we can defend the gun or crew the gun. As late as last October, we could do both simultaneously
2) Don’t let our success go to our heads. We are still a small unit, 4-6 guys can be cut off & annihilated very quickly.
3) We crushed the mounted cavalry Sunday because they were weak. This does not diminish the fact we crushed them, but more aggressive & better-deployed horsemen can & will give us a real run for our money.
4) Keep focusing on Safety. If we get cocky, we will pay for it.
5) Sunday’s battle pushed us to our limits physically. Let’s face it; we are not getting any younger. Dennis was spent; I made myself sick (I was worthless on Monday) I think Creely lost a couple of layers of skin… I’m not saying we need to work on our physical conditioning (O.K., I do…), but be aware of your limits.

Duke

Hot Springs
The following After Action Report is approved, & submitted to the membership for comment. The Commander would like to comment on the efficiency, aggressive spirit & Esprit De Corps which allowed for a crushing victory on Sunday.
The Columbia Flying Artillery attended The Battle of Hot Springs N.C. on 05, 06, 07 June 09 as the 1st Mich. Battery
A. Sat. battle was under the command of Lt. Gardo and was hard fought to the end.
B. Sunday, after a very good church service by Chaplain Written, Lt. Creely was in command of Columbia, along with the 3rd US artillery. Maj. R. Bohland served as over all artillery commander, The battery was tried early by CSA cavalry but held them off. This to was a very hard fight with both guns performing as a very well commanded team. The battle ended with the US infantry pushing the confederates back into the woods. There were no incidents to report. Over all a good event.

Commander's Annual Appeal
As we battle losses, the governmental environment, & the economy what we will be able to accomplish will depend solely on God’s blessings & our use of those resources.
The last couple of years have been very tough on us membership-wise. This is not the end of the world. We have been here before. What it does mean is that resources (powder, primers, care & upkeep of the gun, trailer & other equipment) will be scarce. We will have to pick carefully what we do & how we do it. We will have to be very selective as to where we go. Care must be taken of all unit equipment- there is no replacing assets.
Additionally, we must aggressively seek funding. I hate talking about money. I don’t want to come to our membership with my hand out. However, I would be remiss if I did not pursue every possible source of revenue.
As such, I have decided to begin an annual membership funding appeal. It seems that this month, May, our anniversary month would be the logical month to launch it. Brothers & Sisters, we a federally recognized 591 C-3 organization. IMHO, we provide a valuable service to the community. We maintain the memory of our father’s sacrifices in the face of the current wave of political correctness.
As a 501 C-3, we are eligible for your charitable contributions. So… before you write that check to NPR or the Sierra Club think locally. I hold out these caveats… We neither need nor want your church’s tithe money. Also, if you send money to the Boy Scouts, we don’t want any of that money either. Anything else is fair game.
I’ll keep you up on the progress.

The CFA & the SCV
Should my next statements go beyond our unit, I have no doubt that I will be called everything from a rotten Scalawag, to a Christ denying, One World government type. So be it. Bully’s & nitwits need to be confronted.
I am a proud Southerner. A proud Southern Soldier. My heroes & role models are Lee & Jackson. I try my darndest to live up to the high expectations of the Southern Warrior/Gentleman ideal (yes, I know I fall short). I have always held the South, her struggle for independence & the gallant men who carried her freedom upon their bayonets in high regard. Having said that… The SCV can go jump in the lake.
I resent these self appointed keepers of “Southern Heritage” trying to impose their rules on our hobby & our unit Do they truly think that it reflects honor on the memory of Southern soldiers to see them driven off the field by half a dozen Yankees? No they don’t. They don’t realize that it is important that we galvanize. Further, they don’t care. They do not (as a general rule) reenact, they care nothing for our hobby. They are trying to make some grandiose political statement. We are not less Southern because we portray the 1st Michigan/17th Michigan.
The SCV has come to us before asking for our help. More often than not, we have supplied it. I have never been given so much as a thank you. I guess we were privileged to support them. The SCV has never contributed one thin dime to our coffers. They have never sent even one man to help us maintain or crew the gun. We have volunteered to play blue at several of their sponsored events. I really did not expect their gratitude. However the consistently bad treatment & faint contempt we were/are treated with when wearing Federal Uniforms is unbelievable.
I am done helping/supporting the SCV in any way. If we are at an event, & actions can be taken that are mutually beneficial, fine. But I will not go even a half of a hair out of my way for them. I will not turn away any member because of SCV affiliation. But, We are an independent unit, & I not bend, even one inch, to their desires or demands.

On Pistols
I would like to take a moment to address the issue of weapons safety, specifically pistols. Pistols are a valuable contribution to the battery. They offer a huge short term boost to our firepower that has allowed us to repel attacks by much larger forces. Further, for close in or brush fighting they are ideal. Use of pistols by our security forces was a primary motivation for adopting a CSMC impression.
All of this being said, the downside potential is huge. We have had more pistol “incidents” that any other accident combined. It is this very accident potential that has gotten pistols banned from many of the large umbrella groups.
At this point, I don’t see banning side arms to be in our best interests. However, we do need to set strict guidelines for their use. I propose the following guidelines let me know what you think.
1. The use of pistols is reserved for experienced & well trained troops. No troop below the rank of corporal will use a pistol without specific permission of the officer in charge that day.
2. Safety inspections- Pistols are to be checked just like muskets- barrels must be free of obstructions, timing must work, ½ cock must work. By the way, we can’t safety inspect a loaded pistol- no loading until after safety inspection.
3. Loading- Without an actual pistol ball a revolver can hold a lot of powder: an awful lot of powder (I believe my Dragoon can hold a charge in excess of 50 grains). While I am not going to tell you exactly how many grains to put in your side arm, you don’t need to be firing a !@%$*?!! .44 auto magnum. The biggest issue here is chain fires. If you don’t put enough cream of wheat in front of the powder, you WILL get a chain fire. You should be able to put cream of wheat, pack it in, add more cream of wheat & pack again. By the way, no Wonder Wads, Frozen Peas, oatmeal, or anything else that could be a projectile.
4. Caps- don’t put caps on your nipples that are the wrong size. If you have number 10’s use # 10 caps. Don’t pinch caps on, they either fall off or allow sparks into the unfired cylinders. If you have different sized nipples on the same gun (a testimony to Italian Repro quality) buy new nipples.
5. Firing. You would not fire a musket with somebody’s ear next to the muzzle. Yet most of us (me included) have at one time or another, touched off a pistol too close to somebody. We need some rules of engagement:
A) Look before you shoot. Where is your muzzle?
B) Elevate- never directly fire at anyone. We are not cowboy action shooters; nor
are we reenacting the O.K. Corral.
C) Safety zones – 30 feet if they are too close to fire a musket, they are too close to fie a pistol.
D) Check your hammer- do not holster a weapon with it cocked.
6. There is no hand to hand combat. Thus, a pistol should never be used as a club or tomahawk.

Battle at Broad River
Command Notes & AAR on Broad River Battle.
First, I would like to compliment all of you the action at Broad River. Your performance on the field was excellent. Your behavior in camp was, if a little salty, very genial & it was a welcome time of relaxation & fellowship.
Lieutenant Gardo will send an official After Action Report which I shall publish here & forward to the Valley Division. I would like to post a few comments & observations. Feel free to add your own…
Pros-
1. Lieutenants Gardo & Creely did admirable work as advanced party. The camping area was well shaded, beautiful (& probably the only area we could set up “The Condo”)
2. Both lieutenants did a very solid job commanding the battery, & either could, if need be, ably command in my or Harve’s absence.
3. The return of David Gandy to the ranks was a welcome addition to a battery who has suffered heavy losses in the past 12 months.
4. The field was perfect for artillery, the hills blocked in the sound, and the trees kept both sound & smoke close to the ground & the humidity gave us a wicked good boom. I have never seen better, & I doubt we will ever have such again.
5. The cooperation of the 2nd US Regulars on Saturday allowed us a double canister “Kill Shot” on an advancing infantry column. It looked way cool… the crowd loved it. It was only the second time in 10+ years in the hobby I have seen it, & it was a sight to see.
6. Both the Host Unit & the other units at the event were a great bunch of guys. We were treated with kindness & respect. We were well fed & well taken care of.
Cons-
1. The camping areas were not vehicle friendly.
2. Poison Ivy in the woods needs to be controlled if we camp/fight there.
3. No signs on the roads, it was very difficult to find (especially at night)

Just Because You Are Paranoid, It Does Not mean That They Are Not Out To Get You...
Having read the new Department of Homeland Security Report, it seems very likely that what we participate in can/will be looked at as ‘Right Wing Radical Activity”, in as much as we are, by definition, pro gun, pro military, pro Southern & pro Individual Liberty.
I do not apologize for our positions. I see no way not to be these things & still exist as a living history/reenactment organization. (I suppose we could reenact the Quakers…) As such, I intend to carry on our activities as normal.
I know some of you prefer not to attract attention to yourselves for whatever reason. I/we will respect your rights to dis-associate yourself from us. Just let me know, & you will be removed quietly from the rolls.
If not, I look forward to seeing you in the field at Broad River.

I have been told that we will have artillery command at Broad River. As such, we need to be prepared to do artillery safety inspections. Lieutenant Gardo, this will fall under your responsibility. Coordinate with Sergeant major Eure-He should have the forms. If he does not, let me know, I will secure them. I would like to see a three-man team (Gardo, Eure, Gunnery Sergeant Bohland).
Most Respectfully,
Duke

Off Topic- Pretty Good Joke...
St. Peter said, "I'd like to get you guys in now, but our computer's down. You'll have to go back to Earth for about a week, but can't go back as ministers. What'll it be?"
The first minister says, "I've always wanted to be an eagle, soaring above the Rocky Mountains.""So be it," says St. Peter, and off flies the first minister.
The second minister mulls this over for a moment and asks, "Will any of this week count, St. Peter?""No, I told you the computer's down. There's no way we can keep track of what you're doing.""In that case," says the second minister, "I've always wanted to be a stud.""So be it," says St. Peter, and the second minister disappears.
A week goes by, the computer is fixed, and theLord tells St. Peter to recall the two ministers. "Will you have any trouble locating them?" he asks."The first one should be easy," says St. Peter. "He's somewhere over the Rockies, flying with the eagles. But the second one could prove to be more difficult."
"Why?" asketh the Lord.
"He's on a snow tire, somewhere in Pennsylvania.

Website Revisited
You may (or may not) have noticed that our web award (the one we give) page is missing. Truth be told, the sight was getting too big to upload in FTP format. To reformat it was a lot of time & work that I don't have right now.
Sadly, I don't think this page will be missed. In Seven years, we have given out two awards (no, I have not turned anyone down). My page tracking usually showed one to two page hits a quarter...

On the Indestructability of Zouaves...
I must admit that the event two Sundays past has had me vexed. I had never seen troops the like of what we fought. Were these Uber-Men? Or was I missing some key piece of knowledge regarding our defeat!?! As such I did some research. It appears that our foes were actually correctly portraying 1861 Zouves, whom, it appears, were actually legends in their own minds...
What is a Zouave?
"A fellow with a red bag having sleeves to it for a coat; with two red bags without sleeves to them for trousers, with an embroidered and braided bag for a vest, with a cap like a red woolen saucepan; with yellow boots like the fourth robber in a stage play; with a mustache like two half-pound paint brushes, and with a sort of a sword-gun for a weapon, that looks like the result of a love affair between an amorous broadsword and a lonely musket; discreet and tender--that is a Zouave."
"A fellow who can pull up a hundred and ten pound dumbbell: who can climb up an eighty foot rope, hand over hand, with a barrel of flour hanging to his heels; who can do the "giant swing" on a horizontal bar with a fifty-six tied to each ankle; who can walk up four flights of stairs, holding a heavy man in each hand, at arms length; and who can climb a greased pole feet first carrying a barrel of pork in his teeth--that is a Zouave."
"A fellow who can jump seven-teen feet four inches high without a spring board; who can tie his legs in a double bow knot round his neck without previously softening his shin bones in a steam bath; who can walk bound in tight rope with his stomach outside of nine brandy cocktails, a suit of chain armor outside his stomach, and a stiff northeast gale outside of that; who can take a five shooting revolver in each hand and knock the spots off the ten of diamonds at eighty paces, turning somersaults all the time and firing every shot in the air -- that is a Zouave."

Harmon Field Notes
I am awaiting Adjutant Gardo’s After Action Report on Harmon Field, which I shall publish here before sending it up to the Valley Division. I would like to mention a few observations of my own:
1) We were pretty roughly handled by the Federals. It is not often that we are driven from the field &/or overrun. I’m not really happy with the outcome, but I don’t see any way to have avoided it.
Things that went well:
A. Thanks to Chaplain Written for a good worship service.
B. The defense of the bridge was good. I know you wanted to hold your ground. However, given the shallowness of the stream, which would have allowed both Cavalry & infantry to cross & cut you off, you could do nothing but delay & buy time. This you did & successfully withdrew in the face of heavy Federal fire.
C. We accurately predicted & handled the Federal Cavalry. It looked like they would try to flank us (They did). Harve & Richie headed them off, fired a volley, the kid who always falls off his horse fell off of his horse, & the Cavalry was done as a threat.
D. We did a good job containing the initial Federal attack. In fact, that should have about ended it for the Federals. We swung around, maintained contact with our supporting units and formed what the modern Army refers to as an “L” shaped ambush. The 17th NY was alone, & exposed on its front and left flank to overwhelming fire.
E. We maintained a stiff resistance until all of us were killed or captured.
Things that went badly-
A. The main Confederate unit disappeared. My understanding of the scenario was that both sides were to maneuver for about 30-40 minutes before the Federals drove us off. I was dumbstruck to look around & see the entire main Confederate force decimated 15 minutes into the game. (Apparently the Yankees used silenced machineguns or Nerve Gas…) This left our small platoon as the ONLY Confederates on the field, & the objective of the entire Yankee force.
B. I had failed to properly anticipate & recon the ground we were going to have to retreat to. Harve & Richie got separated from us. Harve was able to withdraw to a nice defensive position in the creek bed. Had we preplanned our withdrawal, we could have bee lined there, & the Yanks would have played Heck getting us out.
C. Our artillery support was silenced almost immediately. Apparently, they were slain in the Federal Nerve Gas attack. I remember hearing two shots…
C. The Yanks were indestructible. We outnumbered the 17th NY. They had been placed in a “Kill Box” (Sorry Harve!) and had taken heavy fire throughout the engagement. Even after we had retreated, we maintained a good volume of “aimed” fire from cover. In spite of this, (at least in my observation) no Federal unit took any causalities.
Whatever the outcome on the field, I had a grand time. Thanks y'all for coming out on short notice!

Harmon Field
I was hoping to get a small event going for Sunday 14 March. This fell through. However, we have wrangled an invitation from the 2nd NCMI (The Yank Cavalry) to attend the Skirmish at Harmon Field on Sunday 22 March. This is located in Tryon (I’ll get directions). Its one day, a light carry-just your muskets, traps, & ammo. We could meet at the field 9am- do breakfast, a little light drill in the morning, burn some powder that afternoon, have dinner & hit the barracks.
Smitty said to bring both coats, but he would try to let us fight as Confederates.
As we did not get in a spring drill day, this would be the perfect opportunity to get the cobwebs out before Anderson. Plus, we have some new guys, I’d like them to “See the elephant” in a small controlled skirmish. I’ll be there- let me know who else is coming.

Saturday: Myself, Richard, Harve, Dennis, Chaplain Written, two new recruits, With Chris arriving at some point during the day.
For Sunday, we can add Ben to the scenario.
I had hoped to field the battery plus a small company to aid the Federal Infantry.
Our numbers will not allow this. So, at this point, we will serve as artillery, armed to defend our cannon.

Additionally, as recognition of his dogged "combat" performance, Chris Creely will take over command of Company A of the 17th Michigan. Rank: 2nd Lieutenant (US). Date of Rank 07 February, 2009.
Please offer your congratulations to these able & loyal soldiers for their new positions.
I will continue to function as First Sergeant of the 17th, offering whatever help I can to the new Commander.
I would like to offer my humble thanks to our brother Ben Eure for taking on the job of commanding the 17th during its formative years. It was a position he did not seek (Ben has never sought ANY position of power or influence for himself), but he accomplished the task with good spirits, & diligence. I am thankful for the job he has done, & I am grateful for his presence among us.
Needless to say, we have set up the cadre for a larger organization. We will need to function "slick sleeved" at events as we have done in the past.
I remain,

Affiliation/Insurance
Based on the information I have gotten from the Valley Division regarding its philosophies & expectations, your feedback, & the availability of liability insurance, I have, on our behalf, accepted the Valley Divisions offer of affiliation. We are now part of the Kanawa Artillery, 4th Battalion.
This will not effect our day to day operations our your events.
If you want to be insured under the Valley Division policy, it will be $12.00 per head for the upcoming year. (That is based on their coverage last year. Any over charges will be covered out of the unit Treasury).
I will need (in addition to the $12.00) the full name of the person to be covered & current contact information to include address & phone. I need this ASAP
PS send contact information to me at: scwarhorse@hotmail.com

Bummer(s)
As I am in the business of selling quality imported goods to the reenacting community, I don't often recommend a competitor. But, some items are just too good to be ignored.
My Federal Bummer cap is one of the most comfortable pieces of headgear I have ever owned (I also had a grey one a few years back, but I loaned it to a troop who then promptly deserted). Heck, I fight the urge to wear it around town between events.
The hat was made by Fair Oaks Sutler. He pretty much got out of the business a couple of years ago, but I have seen today that he is back & making Kepis & Bummers again. Once you wear a Fair Oaks Bummer, you will never put on a formed kepi or packi kepi/bummer again. I am about to spend $75.00 Yankee Dollars to buy two for Richie & another grey one for me.

Rank on Uniforms
1) This is a hobby. We are all here to have fun. Your uniforms have been purchased out of your hard earned money. They are yours- not mine- not Columbia's. As such, you can put anything on them you want. (However, bare in mind that most events frown on Nascar patches)
2). Rank is not given out willy-nilly. It is earned through your aquiring of knowledge, work & increased responsibility. As such, I would never object to any member of the battery/regiment wearing their earned rank.
3) Having said all of that, we do several different impressions; sometimes at the same event. We all have different ranks in different units that Columbia portrays. To better fit in these roles, I suggested that if a member has more than one coat, they keep one coat "slick sleeved".
4) We do not require any member to have two Confederate or two Federal jackets (although many of you do; & in fact, a couple of us could outfit a small company). As such, any member who only had one jacket would be expected to sew his rank on the one jacket.
5) Refer to point 1. I don't care which coat you do or do not sew rank on. Those of you who have frocks, I have suggested (note: suggested) that those would be good coats to leave un-ranked (frocks fit in any theater or any army). But, I also realize that the frocks are good looking uniforms. If that is the uniform you want adorned with your rank, by all means sew your stuff on it :)
I hope this drives a stake through the heart of this issue.

Duke

Valley Division
As we discussed at the business meeting, we are looking at a different affiliation to replace Granbury's.
Afyer looking around, the sanctioning body that appears to be closest to us philosophically is the Valley Division. As an introduction, this is from their website:
Division Policy Statement
Ø Strive to be safety oriented at all times
Ø Strive to be non-political
Ø Strive to use the Military structure set in place
Ø Strive to maintain a quality of authenticity with reality
Ø Strive to promote a family-oriented atmosphere
Ø Strive to take in to account that Re-enacting has different meanings to various people
Ø Strive to stay together, camp together and fight together - ALL branches and function as a division at all events both large and small
Ø Strive to utilize all branches of service simultaneously in actions of any size
Ø Strive to guarantee Event Standards and Battlefield Standards before sanctioning
Ø Strive to utilize the branch of service in the branch for which they are designated
Who We Are
** Rule number 1 - We will not have politics in our outfit !!!
** Rule number 2 - We are happy to have you if you abide by rule number 1.
We are the Army of Northern Virginia - Valley Division. ** We are NOT ANV **.
The membership is an association of independent Soldiers, Companies, Battalions, Period Civilians and 1st Persons with the same goals on what reenacting should be. Re-enacting should be fun while showing the true life experiences of the past.
Our Motto is : *Trust, *Respect, *Honor and *Loyalty to the Division.
If you can abide by rules 1 and 2, and believe in the same purpose, come join in the fun. We would enjoy having you in our association.
Granbury's Brigade
I have made several attempts to contact Granbury's. I have received no response from either Colonel Sharkey or General Volner. I have voiced our concerns to the Brigade Adjutant (Chris Hansen). He has been unable to get a response from the Brigade Command structure.
Per our decision at the January business meeting, Captain Kateman & I will resign our commissions with the Brigade, & we will dis-affiliate ourselves on Sunday.
I am still working on the insurance issue, & will keep you posted.

As Broxton's draws close (Well, kind of close) let me remind you that the faux fighting will be intense. Those who are serving as Infantry will need 150-200 rounds per man.
For you who will be crewing the gun, you may have to defend the piece... it would be prudent to carry 40-50 rounds.
As a reminder, Dennis let me know when you have some info on caps...

New May Event!
We have an outstanding event to replace the canceled reenactment at Central. Captain Kateman has arranged with a local Southern themed business to have us as a weekend draw. The business will reimburse us for all artillery ammunition fired & for hauling the gun. Further, we will be fed & (for those who partake) there will be free cigars.
Further, the business will advertise our presence, and is securing live bluegrass music. This will be a superb chance for us to recruit from like minded Southrons. Additionally, we can train our new crew with live fire, & no pressure from advancing Federals.
The event will be held on May 22nd. As this is a recruiting event, Battery dress uniforms are to be worn (Grey frock or shell, White pants, Kepis with Havelock’s). If any member does not have the Battery Dress uniform, wear your best impression. Whatever you are wearing, make sure it’s clean.
We will plan recruiting activities (Obviously, details to come). I will get more detailed information & update y’all as it becomes available. Meanwhile, change your calendars- New May event 22 May.

Chivalry
While I was researching for my Medieval European History Class, I cam upon this list. I know we don't consistently live up to this (at least I don't) but for those of us who give honor to a distant & fading past, these are ideas to stand by...
Live to serve King and Country.
Live to defend Crown and Country and all it holds dear.
Live one's life so that it is worthy of respect and honor.
Live for freedom, justice and all that is good.
Never attack an unarmed foe.
Never use a weapon on an opponent not equal to the attack.
Never attack from behind.
Avoid lying to your fellow man.
Avoid cheating.
Avoid torture.
Obey the law of king, country, and chivalry.
Administer justice.
Protect the innocent.
Exhibit self control.
Show respect to authority.
Respect women.
Exhibit Courage in word and deed.
Defend the weak and innocent.
Destroy evil in all of its monstrous forms.
Crush the monsters that steal our land and rob our people.
Fight with honor.
Avenge the wronged.
Never abandon a friend, ally, or noble cause.
Fight for the ideals of king, country, and chivalry.
Die with valor.
Always keep one's word of honor.
Always maintain one's principles.
Never betray a confidence or comrade.
Avoid deception.
Respect life and freedom.
Die with honor.
Exhibit manners.
Be polite and attentive.
Be respectful of host, women, and honor.
Loyalty to country, King, honor, freedom, and the code of chivalry.
Loyalty to one's friends and those who lay their trust in thee.

On Ben Butler...
"The story of the captured Rebels who appeared before General Ben Butler to take the oath of allegiance to the United States: One of them, a wag in his way, looked at the General, and with a peculiar Southern drawl, said: "We gave you hell at Chickamauga, General!" The General was furious at the man's familiar impudence and threatened him with all sorts of punishment, but again came that drawling voice, repeating the first part of the statement, but he was stopped by the General, who ordered him to take the oath of allegiance to the United States at once or he would have him shot. After some hesitation, looking into General Butler's fierce eye, he reluctantly consented to take the oath. After taking the oath, he looked calmly into General Butler's face, and drew himself up as if proud to become a citizen of the United States and a member of the Yankee Army, and said: "General, I suppose I am a good Yankee and citizen of the United States now?" The General replied in a very fatherly tone, "I hope so." "Well, General, the rebels did give us hell at Chickamauga, didn't they?"
May the road rise to meet you.

Oct 16-18 Wildcat Kentucky
Oct TBA Furman ROTC Cadet Camp of Instruction
Nov. 09 TBA Green River Plantation
2) Liability Insurance: The Commander reported that the promised coverage from Granbury’s Brigade had not been forthcoming. He further said that he was investigating securing coverage from several other sources.
Brother Joe Kateman pointed out that the entire purpose of affiliating with Granbury’s was to relieve the battery of the burden of self insuring. Further, he suggested that if the unit had to, again, self insure that the battery should withdraw its affiliation & again function as a purely independent battery. This motion was seconded & passed by a majority of the membership.
The membership instructed the commander to investigate possible sources of liability insurance & report his findings ASAP.
3) Recruiting- Brother Creely stated that he had a possible member interested & would follow up. Brother Harve Kateman said that he also was aware of a potential member & that the commander needed to e-mail this person appropriate information.
4) The new gun- The members were in general agreement that a second gun was a viable project. The commander was tasked with finding carriage plans. All members were tasked with looking for wheels in any condition.
5) Dues- As the 08 powder levy exceeded unit needs, the membership decided to apply the funds to covering all dues except direct liability insurance costs.

Winter Camps
A couple of notes as the dreary month of January sets in...
Uniforms: Now is a good time to take stock of you uniform(s). Unpack them, don't let them sit & get moldy. I usually dry clean everything once per year. January is a good time.
As I was doing research for my medeival history class, I came on an article that stated the peopel of medieval Europe seldom washed their outer clothes- wood smoke acted as a type of deoderant. This must have some truth, because as much as I have perspired, my wools smell of only one thing-hardwood smoke.
Further, they say that smell is the strongest prod for memory. This also seems to be true. I get a good nose full of wood smoke, and the urge to hit the field runs through me like an electrical current. I can hardly wait.
As always when I'm thinking about the "hobby", my thoughts turn to y'all. It remains my conviction that we are one of the finest artillery batteries in the hobby. I never cease to be impressed by the loyalty and hard work that so many of you display. I am honored to stand among you.
I have said this before, but it bears repeating. We, or more specifically You, have created something special. To me, our brotherhood is a sanctuary; an island in a sea of cultural madness, where manners, brotherhood, and traditions still matter.
However, we are an association of mere men. Like any association, we have our challenges. We all get different things out of the hobby; and each decision that meets one member's needs misses the mark with another member. We must execute care in our words and actions towards each other. Lord knows, there are enough people in and out of the hobby who want to be rid of us. We should not, and cannot fight among ourselves. Please look towards your brother members with kindness.
As always, I am honored to serve among you.
May the Road Rise to meet you.

Insurance
As you are all probably aware, there have been rumors flying around regarding the status of Granbury's Brigade. We have sought to avoid involving ourselves in the rumor mill & will continue to do so.
However, one of the prime reasons we had for affiliating was to ease the burden of insurance. I have sent two dispatches to Granbury's Brigade regarding their insurance program. So far, the silence has been deafening.
I have begun the process of collecting quotes for our own policy. I will keep you informed.

Recruiting
Events, especially the small ones we like to frequent, are suffering from a dearth of reenactors. The fact that we can credibly fight both as artillery & infantry has led to what i.m.h.o. is a bizarre turn of events. We have become the equivalent of a WWII Wehrmacht Kampfgruppe- a combined arms force to be thrown into desperate situations. ( I can't imagine what our 3-4 man squad of Infantry looks like driving whole companies off; if I were paying to see a reenactment I would want my money back).
There is nothing we can do about events. The free market will cull these, some will go away, the others will get stronger. There is nothing I can (or want) to do about other units. My concern is us... What are we going to do to maintain and increase our numbers?
I look forward to hearing from you,

First Post/New Musket for Christmas!
I spend quite a bit of time thinking about how I can make things better; not for the hobby, (nobody has asked my opinions) but for our battery. I get an awful lot out of being around you guys. I have learned a tremendous amount about our past, myself, & what I can (or can't) do.
I really want this experience to be something special for everybody- something we do not get in our day to day lives. As such, I bounce ideas around in my head. Sometimes, ideas just seem to spring out of nowhere (only to quickly fade back into oblivion).
I am hoping we can use this blog to share these ideas we get & flesh them out. The decisions we make as a team at events are pretty good. I don't see why our long term plans & goals cannot benefit from our collective input.
Also, I see, read, and hear about a lot of cool stuff. I never remember to tell you guys- everyone in the battery has gotten a phone call from me saying, "I called you for a reason, but I'm dammed if I can remember what it is..." I really, REALLY hate talking on the phone anyway. I think I would rather have a molar extracted with no anesthesia. I don't mass e-mail; I hate to get it, so I don't send it. But, this seems to be a grand forum for sharing as our new Pinhead Overlord says, "Spreading the Wealth around".
So sit back, relax, and feel free to make fun of me, because here is the first post: New Musket for Christmas!
My practically perfect wife has once again outdone herself at Christmas. Back in the spring I was trolling the 'Net and saw an interesting item: Loyalist Arms was producing a "Model 1839 Conversion Musket". To those of you who have a real life & don't spend their time keeping up with archaic British Martial Arms, the Model '39 was, basically, a 3rd Model Brown Bess converted to percussion ignition. These & Model 1842 (an evil stepsister musket) were imported in small quantities during the Late Unpleasantness.
I was immediately overtaken by lust. Ralphie & the Red Ryder had nothing on me. I made myself a royal pain in the arse. My wife was inundated by musket spam, poorly veiled hints, etc.
Well, she came through. When I got up Christmas morning- there it was. Let me tell you-the doggone thing is drop dead gorgeous. The fit & finish is excellent (Trigger pull is a little stout but that is common on any repro I've ever gotten). If this is a typical example of Loyalist Arms products- I know where I am buying all of my muskets from now on.
By the way, check them out- They have a huge selection of cool arms: 42 Springfields, Enfields...
I'll keep you posted after I get it out to the range.
Regards,
Duke
